AP Studio Art Exhibition, through June 2

A reception on Wednesday, May 17, from 5-7 p.m. in Junior Hall celebrated the work of St. Mary’s AP Studio Art class. The show served as a prelude to the Spring Choral Concert. The exhibit of selected work from the “Concentration” and “Breadth” sections of students’ portfolios is on display in the school’s front hall and Junior Hall. Check out the sample of students “Concentration” pieces below.

The 2017-18 AP Studio Art class starts with a meeting for students and parents on Wednesday, May 31, at 7 p.m. in the Art Room, G-2. After school on Thursday, June 1, students will take a field trip to see the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Thesis Show and to get to know each other.

Summer Art Courses

If your student is interested, be sure to register for classes before all places are filled. Nearly all art schools offer some type of pre-college summer program. Ms. Mitchell has information about many schools in the Art Room, G-2, or Google the school you are interested in.

  • Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) pre-college programs are intensive experiences for students aged 15-19. Pre-College Foundation runs for three weeks, July 10-28. Pre-College Studios have two one-week sessions, July 31-August 4 and August 7-11. Both programs are hosted at PNCA’s main campus, 511 N.W. Broadway in the Pearl District.

The foundation program immerses students in 2D, 3D, and digital foundation courses, identical to what first-year college art students take. Studio Session One offers a choice of Drawing the Figure, Illustration + Visual Storytelling and Animated Arts. Studio Session Two offers Painting the Figure, Illustration: Character + World Design, and Animated Arts. For details, visit pnca.edu go to: or email ce@pnca.edu.

  • Oregon College of Art & Craft (OCAC) pre-college weekly workshops include a wide array of fine art and craft media. The classes are designed to help students develop a studio practice and build a portfolio. OCAC is located at 8245 S.W. Barnes Road, Portland. Their website is ocac.edu.
  • Multnomah Arts Center (7688 SW Capitol Hwy., Portland): For classes, go to www.PortlandParks.org and click on the “Register Now” tab. MAC offers classes for all ages in drawing, painting, clay, collage, fibers, metalsmithing, mosaic, glass, photography, painting, and printmaking, as well as music and dance.
