Dragon Boat Paddlers Prep for Rose Festival Race

The St. Mary’s Dragon Boat team is 72 members strong this season and is steadily preparing for their season-culminating event at the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat races, June 10 -11.

On April 29, the SMA paddlers opened the season at the St. Martin’s University Dragon Boat Festival in Olympia, Washington. The team had two full boats and competed in the 15-team women’s division. The wet conditions made for some challenging conditions, but the Blues prevailed and picked up some valuable experience.

The Blues also competed in the Rainier Dragon Boat Festival May 20, where the team paddled Hong Kong-style boats.

The final tune-up race for the team prior to the Rose Festival event is the False Creek Regatta in Vancouver, B.C., on May 27. Head Coach Tom Crowder has strategically planned the paddlers’ training and race preparations so the squad will be race-ready on June 10.

Come down to the waterfront June 10 -11 to cheer on the Blues as they charge down the course to catch the flag. Go Blues!
