Counselor’s Corner

Good day, St. Mary’s Parents and Guardians,

This year, the focus of our Counselor’s Corner has been on the parent/child relationship and how parents can help empower their teens and support them with making healthy choices. We have recently heard about the increase in the abuse of prescription drugs among teenagers and have provided some simple ways for parents to help make sure this issue does not become a major concern here at St. Mary’s Academy.  Below are some concrete steps we encourage you to take today if you are not already doing so:

  • Safeguard all drugs at home. Monitor quantities and control access.
  • Set clear rules for teens about all drug use, including not sharing medicine and always following the medical provider’s advice and dosages.
  • Be a good role model by following these same rules with your own medicines.
  • Properly conceal and dispose of old or unused medicines in the trash.
  • Ask friends and family to safeguard their prescription drugs as well.

Talk with your teen about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs.  These drugs can be very dangerous and may be more deadly than drugs found on the streets. The risks are not worth it!
