Behind the scenes of The Sound of Music

We want to give you a quick inside look of what we are up to as we rehearse and prepare our musical.

Students of the theatre department meet every Saturday from 9 – 3 to support set construction and lighting design. Our technical director Demetri Pavlatos works with students to read construction drawings and utilize the appropriate tools to construct the set.

The set design includes a large painted backdrop of the Alps. Under the direction of technical director, Demetri, advanced art students Aya Doslu, Miranda Field-Martin and Zoey Tevault have spent a few weekends mapping out and painting the apx. 30 x 20 foot backdrop that will be seen throughout much of the show.

The Sound of Music is not known for its big dance numbers, but our production features some clever ways to incorporate dance and showcase our incredibly talented students and choreographer, Lisa Zandy. We think our audience will be surprised and delighted. One dance number that is in the show is the folk-dance “the Laendler.”  Here the students are learning this traditional dance for a pivotal moment in the story.

Putting on the musical is a big undertaking and hugely rewarding. The cast is working hard learning over 30 different musical numbers with vocal director and SMA’s very own Kathy Briggs. In just over a week, we will welcome 40 more Team Tech members to rehearsals. Our professional orchestra will then arrive to complete the magic. In spite of all the snow days and missed rehearsals, we are confident this show will be dynamite.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to work at a school that supports, fosters, and encourages the arts. Working with these talented students and professionals is a dream job. I am so proud of all of the work we have done on this show so far. Please join us for our production of The Sound of Music. We are so excited to share it with you!

SPECIAL DEDICATION:

On Sunday, March 5, the SMA theatre department will have a special performance in honor of former Theatre Director Sr. Ignatia Anne Moore. The special performance will be specifically dedicated to her memory and the audience will be invited to sing along to some of the most beloved songs from the musical.
