Continuing Parent Education
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, February 23, when Donny Wright will come to SMA to address parents and answer questions about how to talk to your teen about a number of issues. Donny Wright specializes in adolescent development, addictions, and family therapy, and he has been providing parenting consultations, presentations, and therapy to families, individuals, schools, and other organizations for the last ten years. We hope to see you there. In the Commons at 6 p.m.
SMA is Looking for a Part-Time Café Assistant
Forget what you might envision about working in a cafeteria. In the Blues Note Café, the food is made with love and from scratch. Our café provides two meals a day for the students and staff, and there is lots of room for creative freedom. The menu is very much in your hands. You will work with your supervisor to come up with a variety of nutritious options. Please visit the St. Mary’s website for further information.
Traffic is Bad—and It’s Not Getting Better
At our Freshmen Parent Night on February 8, I shared some headlines: “Portland growing faster than previously thought”; “250,000 people expected to move to Portland”; and “More people moving to Portland than any other state…again.” Let’s face it, Portland’s traffic has changed, and we have to adapt to our new reality. When students arrive at school at least 15-20 minutes before classes begin, it gives them time to visit their lockers, check in with friends, and get to class. Being ready to start class and focus when the bell rings is very helpful to students and teachers alike, and it sets your daughter up for a successful day ahead.
Outdoor School Leadership
St. Mary’s has long been a strong supporter of the Outdoor School program. In fact, we send the most student leaders out of all of the participating high schools. Many students report that their participation in this program is a “life-changing event.” Registration for student leaders is now open for the Spring session, and the mandatory workshop is scheduled for April 7-8. Visit the MESD website for more information becoming a student leader: www.mesd.k12.or.us. Freshmen interested in participating in the Oregon Trail program should also sign up for this workshop. Students who would like more information are welcome to stop by my office any time.
