St. Mary’s Academy has quite a love for choral art. With over 200 voices making up the choral program here at SMA, we are always looking for opportunities to let these ladies sing and expand their skills. On Saturday, October 29, Kathy Briggs and Ashley McCullar brought eight SMA choir students to Pacific University to attend the Oregon ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) Fall Choral Workshop. Riona O’Donnell, Tori Mozdy, Kyra Lauersdorf, Lucy Sagoo, Devon Thomas, Grace Bragdon, Antonia Ly, and Hannah Park gave up their Saturday to spend the entire day improving their music literacy and sight reading skills.
While students were singing “do-re-mi,” Ms. Briggs and Ms. McCullar attended the directors’ session given by Dr. Richard Nance from Pacific Lutheran University with other conducting colleagues from around the state. At the end of the day each group performed repertoire that they had sight-read earlier in the day in a closing “informance performance.” The event concluded with the ACDA announcing their inaugural state awards for excellence in choral music. Kathy Briggs was honored with the 2016 Oregon ACDA Podium Award in recognition of outstanding work in the choral arts. Congratulations Kathy, and to all the SMA students who performed so well.
