The Scholastic Art Awards is the largest, longest running, and most prestigious student art recognition program in America. Little Bird Arts, OAEA (Oregon Art Education Association), PNCA (Pacific Northwest College of Art), and OCAC (Oregon College of Art and Craft) sponsor the Portland Metro Regional Awards. Last year 48 St. Mary’s students participated with 195 individual pieces and eight senior portfolios. They were recognized with eleven Gold Keys, seventeen Silver Keys, thirty-one Honorable Mentions, one Gold Key portfolio, and one Silver Key portfolio, for a total of sixty-one awards. Rose Gibian also received a national Silver Medal award.

Students may enter as many pieces as they wish, except in the Photography category where only sixteen pieces may be entered. Seniors may submit individual works as well as two portfolios. Art Portfolios of eight pieces are submitted in digital form on line, and have scholarship possibilities attached. There are local as well as national scholarships.

Students may submit work in any of the following categories: Architecture, Ceramics & Glass, Comic Art, Design, Digital Art, Drawing & Illustration, Editorial Cartoon, Fashion, Film & Animation, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Video Games and Art Portfolios (seniors only).

There is also a Future New category that invites students to make work that challenges the boundaries of the current Scholastic Awards’ categories.

Individual entries cost $5 and portfolios cost $20.

The criteria for judging are originality, technical skill, and personal vision or voice.

This year Scholastic Art Awards makes it easy for students to register and enter their work. All entries must be photographed and loaded onto the website by January 3. Our zip code is 97201. Printed and signed entry forms, along with entry fees, must be turned into Ms. Mitchell in G-2 on or before Monday, January 3. Don’t believe the date given on the website! Checks must be made out to St. Mary’s Academy and I send in one check for all St. Mary’s students.

A formal Gold Key ceremony will be held at the Portland Art Museum on Tuesday, February 21. The exhibit of Gold Key individual work and Gold Key portfolios will be displayed at PNCA January 29 to February 24. There are informal receptions for both exhibits on First Thursday, February 2.
