SMA Athletics: 2016 Fall Sports Are Out of the Gate!

Cross Country

The Blues return to action as the 2-time defending Three Rivers League cross country champions.

Seniors Lara Rix and Maddie Ott, along with junior Rowan Halsey, are back from the Blues 2015 TRL championship team and are joined by sophomore transfer Sarah Lyell who finished third at the same event.

Heading up the 88 member team is Coach Mike Bojorquez back for his nineteenth season at the helm for the Blues. Kate O’Sullivan, Liz McCullough, and Maura Timoney return as assistant coaches, and are rejoined by Dan Hemmen and Charles Douglas, both former Blues cross-country coaches.

Join the pack and cheer on the Blues at one of their upcoming meets. They host their only home meet of the season on October 12 at Westmoreland Park beginning at 4:30 p.m., or find the team’s full schedule at: http://www.stmaryspdx.org/uploaded/documents/Athletics/cross-country/2016-17/2016_SMA_XC_Schedule.pdf. Soccer

The Blues soccer teams are off to a great start this season with both the JV and varsity teams notching victories in their home opener versus the Aloha Warriors from the Metro League.

The Blues are led by 11 returners including all-Three Rivers League midfielder Carolyn Brandt, and fellow seniors Paityn Lehman, Camille Marshall, and Kayleigh Spaulding.

Second year SMA Head Coach Nelson Larson is putting the Blues through their paces in preparation for the 14 match season, including six nonleague matches, to open the season and eight tough Three Rivers opponents all contending for the league crown and a shot at the state title. Former SMA Soccer coach Renae Puppo returns to the Blues after returning from the east coast to guide the JV squad. SMA alum Sydney Vincent is back for her third season leading the JV2 soccer crew.

Come out and cheer on the Blues at Buckman Field; JV2 and JV matches at 4:15 p.m., and varsity at 6:15 p.m. Find their schedules on the soccer page of our school website here.

Volleyball

The 2016 Volleyball Blues teams have launched into league play and are gearing up for their first tournaments of the season this month. Senior Kenzie Fedota , 2015 All-Three Rivers League first team player, along with classmates Claire Adams, Caroline Houser, Emma Miller, junior Molly Mason, and sophomores Tallie Davidson and Hadlee Hallman, return for the Blues. The team is eager for their shot at a coveted state playoff berth. New co-head coaches Sheena Surplus and Kelsey Eby lead the varsity squad and program.

Eby is also the JV coach welcoming nine former players back, while SMA alum Elly Kittler has stepped up to take the reins of the JV2 team this season. Track all three Blues volleyball teams’ success, or better, come on out and cheer on the players. Find the team results at:  http://www.stmaryspdx.org/athletics/schedules-results/scoreboard .

West Portland Physical Therapy & OHSU Sports Medicine Continue With PEP

St. Mary’s student-athletes have enjoyed the great benefit of working with the dynamic duo of West Portland Physical Therapy (WPPT) and OHSU Sports Medicine physicians to keep them on the court and pitch this fall. SMA student-athletes participating in volleyball and soccer have been assessed and subsequently trained in the ACL injury prevention program known as the PEP warm-up.

This is the fourth year St. Mary’s has been provided with this tremendous training tool by WPPT and OHSU under the direction of Kathi McCoy, PT, and Dr. Melissa Novak. The players have clearly benefitted from the program on several levels including a reduction in lower extremity injuries, improved fitness, and exposure to careers in sports medicine. St. Mary’s Athletic Department thanks its community partners for supporting our student-athletes and teams.
