2016 Rainier Dragon Boat Festival Report
On May 7, the St Mary’s Academy dragon boat team participated in the 2016 Rainier Dragon Boat Festival in Tacoma, Washington. The team of 23 had a truly spectacular performance in this second event of the 2016 season. The team was made up of eight experienced paddlers and 15 first-year paddlers. For our drummer and steersperson this was their first actual racing event. The team competed against six other competitive and experienced women’s teams.
In the first heat we placed second, with a time 2:41.75 against three other teams. In our second heat we again placed second with a time of 2:37.72 against three other teams. In the semi-final heat we placed first with a time of 2:35.31 against two other teams, qualifying us for the Women’s A Final. In this three-team race we placed second with at time of 2:27.80, our best time of the day.
Placing second overall in the women’s division was a great achievement for this team because the paddlers found themselves paddling in a fourth, and unexpected race — the Women’s A Final — and finishing second! This performance prepares us well for our next competition, the False Creek Women’s Regatta in Vancouver, BC. Everyone left the event for the long bus ride home happy and satisfied with their hard earned accomplishment.
2016 False Creek Dragon Boat Regatta
Soggy is the best word to describe the SMA Dragon Boat team’s experience at this year’s False Creek Regatta. From the moment the team arrived in Vancouver, BC, through two days of racing they paddled through showers and cloudbursts the Pacific Northwest is known for.
The teams competed hard against their soggy competition, but found being waterlogged was not conducive to fast times on the water. The paddler’s resiliency to compete in all conditions along with an afternoon of shopping in downtown Vancouver left the group with a feeling of success – and a desire to go back to BC in the future! A huge shout out to all of the parents and chaperones for their assistance in making this trip doable and contributing to the team’s success.
Next up for the team is the final race of the season, the Rose Festival Dragon Boat races. Results will be posted on the Portland-Kaohsueng website. Way to go coaches Crowder, Crowder, and Chandler! Go Blues!
