Freshman Visual Arts Gallery: Visit Projects on Display
January 26 – February 22: Amazing work made by freshmen who “Copied the Masters,” artwork by contemporary artists that was displayed in Portland area galleries during November, will be on view in Junior Hall and the Library.

Senior Art Shows on display in Junior Hall
February 22 – March 4:  Artwork by Madeleine Farmer ’16 and Emily Hery ’16 will be on display in the Junior Hall.

Art Club Speaker Mark Shapiro from LAIKA
On Thursday, January 14, Mark Shapiro from Laika gave a presentation to the Art Club about the process of stop-motion animation. Laika produced the films Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls, and is set to release Kubo and the Two Strings on August 19.

Teresa Mahoney ’05

SMA Alumna Teresa Mahoney ’05, Speaker for NAHS
On Friday, January 29, Teresa Mahoney, class of 2005, will share with the National Art Honor Society about her experience working at The Oregonian with a technique called stop-motion video. She collaborates with investigative journalists to simplify challenging information, which is often scientific. Her recent work on the article about AIDS researcher Dr. Louis Picker at OHSU is an example.

Scholastic Art Awards
St. Mary’s students entered eight senior portfolios and 200 individual artworks to the Scholastic Art Awards this year. We are proud of the work entered and look forward to the results of the judging.

Scholastic Art Awards Calendar

  • Monday, January 25: Notification of awards to teachers via email
  • Friday, January 29: Delivery of actual Gold Key work to PNCA
  • Sunday, January 31 – Friday, February 26: Exhibition of Gold Key portfolios and individual works at PNCA, Pacific Northwest College of Art, 511 S.W. Broadway.
  • First Thursday, February 4: Reception for all Scholastic Art Awards participants at PNCA
  • Wednesday, February 17: Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony at the Portland Art Museum Grand Ballroom. Rehearsal 4:30 p.m., ceremony 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

OCAC High School Exhibition, February 25 to March 10, 2016
Arthur DeBow, curator of the Hoffman Gallery at Oregon College of Art and Craft, will be coming to St. Mary’s on Tuesday, February 2, to select work for this year’s OCAC High School Exhibition. Cash prizes will be awarded at the reception on Thursday, February 25, 4:00 – 6:00pm, 8245 SW Barnes Road, Portland OR  97225.

Celebrate National Handwriting Day with a free handwriting success workshop, Saturday, February 13, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Kempton Hall, 147 NW 19th Avenue, Portland, OR 97209. All ages are welcome to enjoy the wisdom of these experienced teachers. All workshop material will be provided.
