SMA freshman Natalia Garcia’s essay on the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights claimed the third-place prize. Natalia will receive $50 from the United Nations Association, Portland Chapter.
English 9 teacher Ellie Gilbert said, “SMA students are known for their exceptional writing, and it is so exciting to see two first-year students win such a prestigious competition against high school students of all ages from around the Portland-metro area. To have two young women from our school place in the top three finalists is amazing! We are extremely proud of both these young women.”
The UNA is a national civic organization that promotes involvement in important social and economic issues that partners with the World Affairs Council of Oregon.
